It's been a while since I posted some of the Foster cats that have came through our house.

The next three came in to us the week of September 15th 2004. They were Joy (below), a grey and white momma with her two tabby girl kittens, Mia (left) and Brandi (right). They were names after the US Womans Soccer players: Joy Fawcett, Mia Hamm and Brandi Chastain. They were not with us long all getting adopted fairly quickly. Mia was first to go the week of October 19th 2004, followed by Joy the week og Oct 26th 2004 and finally Brandi the next week.

University

Tall, grim blocks of flats rise high
Above the seeing vision leaving
The view beyond entirely up to the imagination
Of the mind. The mind so young,
So impressionable, unable to appreciate
Situations above and beyond the that known rises
And falls as it tries to reach goals. Goals that
Seem unattainable, seem beyond the scope
Of an immature, unstretched being. University?
A university that teaches, not subjects
Deemed to stimulate, designed to cram
The brain full of information useful
Only in the passing of exams, obtaining a degree
Thats use is beyong negigible, but,
A university who's education develops men.
Graduation is in life, a person that can reach
The very depth of his soul, the very depths
Of his personaliti. A mature, useful mind
That into the world can survive, so the view
Above the flats can be seen.

I am going to indugle myself one more time. I found another famous Morecambe and Wise sketch and another of my favourites. Singing in the Rain.

-Richard
Listening to Andre Previn play and conduct The London Symphony Orchestra reminded me of when he was on Morecambe and Wise. Morecambe and Wise were (are) my Dads favourite comedy duo. As such, we spent many hours watching them on TV. In my opinion they are still very funny now. The Previn appearance was and still is one of my favourite. I managed to find a little documentary on YouTube that features this sketch. Enjoy!!

I mentioned earlier this week of my love for art. I first gained this love when I was living in London. I regularly visited The National Gallery and The Tate Gallery and spent hours in the impressionist and modern sections especially. My favourite painting and infact the only one I have copy of is "Boating on the Seine" by Pierre Augustus Renoir (below) which is in my home office. I spent hours staring it, especially times when I was feeling stressed just to escape. I often stopped in the Gallery on my way downtown on the way to Concerts at the South Bank. The art and the ambience always put me in the right frame of mood to relax, and soak up the music. Lots of happy memories!! For those visiting the City it is on my top of my list of recommendations to visit.

I am extremely grateful that I married a girl who also loves and enjoys art!!

On Monday I took the day of work to go to a special "Monet in Normandy" at the North Carolina Museum of Art here in Raleigh.

It was a beautiful experience. I love art, especially the impressionists. The way they re-create nature and God's creation is breathtaking. It gave us an hour escapism from the craziness of life. Normandy is also my favourite place in France having visited it several times, so that was an extra bonus.

Jenn and I are actually members of the Museum. We believe in support local art and every year we choose something to support this year it is the Art Gallery. I have chosen two Monet's to post here. They are both actually part of the Museum's permanent collection. Click on them and it will take you to the Museum web-page giving the story and credits.

Fighting

The towns are fighting.
Riots in the street:-
Fire's lighting,
With a bass drum beat
Of stone's being thrown
At anything breakable.
Through the noise a drone
Is heard. Police trying to make is stable.

The nations are fighting.
Bombs are stockpiled,
Armies are marching.
However mild the problem seems
Panic ensues
As each leader dreams
Of holding all the cues!

The earth is fighting
To stay alive
As pollution is creeping
In a relentless drive
To deprive its natural resources,
To destroy every living thing,
It seems as all the courses
Can only terror bring.

Every person is fighting
An inward fear of turmoil -
A dormant fear no longer sleeping
A peaceful existance to spoil.
Emotions all mixed up
From hate to love and back
As if everyone has a full cup.
The only way out - attack.

God is fighting -
To save man
From all the eveil feeling.
The hatred that began
When Satan dropped to Hell
Through all the work he's done.
Many fell -
Until there came God's "only begotten Son".

About time I posted another poem.....

Desert Music

I can see the values
So long cherished,
So long held dear -
Evaporated.

When life was gentle,
Security the key,
Time enjoyed -
Harried.

There once was harmony,
Tunes so clear,
Melodies so fresh -
Disonence!!

7th August 1991 - The Royal Albert Hall, London, England.

This was written during the performance of "Desert Music" by Steve Reich. My first exposure to his music which led me to becoming a huge "fan" of his.

Snowflake, unfortunately lost another kitten this week. Frosty. Well, technically he wasn't under our care. Him and his two sisters had been surrended to the vets where they were going to be spayed and neutered before they came to us. As soon as they put the little guy under anesthesia his heart stopped working and despite a valient effort from the vet he could not be resucitated. A necropsy revealed that he had really bad hypotrophic cardiomyiopothy and probably wouldn't have lived very long anyway. Although we never had him in, it still hurts when this happens as our mission is to save these little lives.

Fortunatly his sisters survived and are doing really well. They are in our house as foster kittens. They are 18 weeks old can called Tinstle and Mistletoe.

I had a "surreal" experience on Monday afternoon. I had the opportunity of watching Hartlepool United live in my living room in Raleigh, North Carolina on The Fox Soccer Channel. Not a very good game, which ended in Hartlepool winning a penalty shoot-out after a dire 0-0 against Rochdale in the first round of the FA Cup. Little Victoria Park looked nice and the field was in a very good condition. I wonder when this very, very rare opportunity will occur again?

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Obviously this is an American experience, but, one that I really enjoy. Starting with sitting down relaxing watching the Macy's Parade, eating Turkey dinner and just relaxing with the family. A great time!!

I am Thankful for my family and the opportunities that I have had in this Country. Thanksgiving is a very special time for Jenn and I, as it's on Thanksgiving Day 11 years ago that we actually started dating. I was visiting her and family in Edna, Texas (about 100 miles southwest of Houston) for my first Thanksgiving. I am very thankful for that first Thanksgiving!!

Wednesday was a very sad day in our house. Barney died. Barney was a foster cat who was really part of our family. His brother Fred (left) and he (right) came to us in October 2003 and have been with us ever since. They both have a weird disease that causes the immune system to be over active. They have fought it for a long time, but, Barney finally lost the battle. He was my special cat. They both shared my home office with me and therefore spent a lot of time with me. Barney used to sit on the desk with me or on my lap whilst I work. He was a pleasure to foster and I am very grateful that he was in my life. The photo above, taken just a few weeks ago, shows him looking healthy and happy and sums him up.

He deterioted very rapidly, and, he was ready to go. The last thing he did was lay in my arms and purr. I will miss him a lot. His brother Fred is home and still fighthing. He is doing better than I thought being on his own and I hope he will fight for a long time yet.

Good bye Barney: I love you and miss you.

"And they still have got the soul of San Jose Earthquakes. I'm sorry, but...No, I'm not sorry; I'm proud to say it: They were a crackin' team in San Jose; It was a tragedy how they were ripped away from the Bay Area--and they've taken it to Houston and given them a beautiful present."

MLS Cup Final 2006. A day of mixed emotion. My team the, Earthquakes obviously no longer existed. However, with the team moving to Houston most of the players that we grew to love and follow where on that team. So, with Houston winning the Championship I have to be happy for the players, but, they should have been playing in San Jose blue, not, Houston Orange.

However, there was some news this week, when the new prospective owners for a new San Jose Earthquakes opened a new office in San Jose. It's a long process to get the Quakes back, but, it is a start.

A taste of home.

This week I am back in the Bay Area of California for some meetings in Walnut Creek. Yes, we had some tough times when we lived here, but, it is a good place to visit and catch up with some friends, although it is definatly not the same coming here on my own and having to leave Jenn at home.

There are a few things that have happy memories from when we lived here. The San Jose Earthquakes, some very good friends, my church and Mr Pickwick's. Mr. Pickwick's is an English pub located in Concord, California. It's a place we found were they made "proper" fish n' chips. We often went there when we feeling down or a touch homesick for England.

Tonight, I went back there again. I had Fish and Chips with Mushy Peas, Curry Sauce and Brown Sauce with a pot of PG Tips to drink. In the next booth to me there were two English gentlemen talking, one a Geordie and the other from the London area talking about West Ham United. A definate lump came to my throat!!

Yesterday was the birthday of a good friend of mine, Lak. We first became friends when she was actually a placement student working for me at Inco (Europe) in London in 1992-1993. Lak is a Sri Lankan. After she left her placement she went back to Sri Lanka for a vacation and invited me to go and visit. I spent a fantastic two weeks there seeing some magnificent scenary and the some of the most friendly people one could imagine to meet. I became good friends with her, and her family. When she got married to Andreas a couple of years later I was invited to be a part of her wedding party as a groomsman. A great honour of which I will always be grateful. She is now living in Germany with Andreas (who is German) and her two daughters.

Sri Lanka, obviously came heavily into the news a couple of years ago with the devastation of the Tsumani. Many of the places that were destroyed I had seen and been to. The beauty I remember was no longer there. However, they are a strong, proud people and will go on stronger than ever. All the people that I new over there survived with out any harm coming to them.

I would thouroughly recommend a visit if you have a chance to go to this spectacular island. A great place, great people and great memories.

The photos in this post are: The one at the top centre is of Lak and I had the top of The Sigiriya Rock Fortress, The one on horses, is myself, Lak and her cousin Dhamikka, who also becamce a close friend riding through the tea plantations of Nuwara Eliya. The one next to it is the temple in Kandy and the final one is a photo taken from a boat as we left the coast into the Indian Ocean to look at the coral reef. This is one area that was devestated in the Tsunami.

Desert Music

I can see the values
So long cherished,
So long help dear -
Evaporated.

When life was gentle,
Security was key,
Time enjoyed -
Harried?

There once was harmony,
Tunes so clear,
Melodies so fresh -
Disonence!

Another poem written during the Prom 1991 series. This was after listening to "Desert Music" composed by Steve Reich during a late night Prom.

Last week I had to go to Wood Dale, Illinois for work. Wood Dale is a suburb of Chicago.

Chicago, in my opinion is good city to visit, but not a place that I would like to live. The main reason, I would guess is the cold weather. It's the tenth time that I've been there. This time it was all work and no play so there was no chance to see any of the city. Except that is a fantastic view of the downtown as we flow over Lake Michigan on our approach to O'Hare Airport on a beautiful clear day.

We have visited some places in the City in the past. The three that come to mind that I can remember are The Art Gallery, Sears Tower and Brookfield Zoo.

I think the Art Institute of Chicago is my favourite. A very good collection. It also hosts Jenn's favourite painting, The Child's Bath painted by Mary Cassatt (right).

The Sears Tower was a great experience. We went to the top on clear summer day and had a fantastic view of the city. Over Lake Michigan, Soldier Field, The Buckingham Fountain, Wrigley Field and all the other famous landmarks. I would definately recommend a visit.

Brookfield Zoo
, a famous zoo was a bit dissapointing. I think having visited The North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro makes it look poor in comparison. However, I have also seen worse. Any way to conserve and protect the animals and wildlife of the World had to be good.

The next cats we fostered were out first kittens. They were found by the partner of our realator in her neighbourhood. We agreed to take them. There were five of them. Two boys - Winston (a fluffy black kitten - below on my lap) and Gladstone (a little fluffy tabby - top centre) and three girls - Clementine (a black kitten - below below on Jenn's shoulder), Maggie (a fluffy grey kitten - left on my lap) and Blair (another fluffy grey girl - below on the toilet seat). We called them the "Prime Minsters" kittens as they were named after: Winston and Clementine Churchill, William Gladstone, Margert Thatcher and Tony Blair. They were about 8 weeks old and scared, especially Blair who was almost feral. It wasn't long before they came around and all got adopted out to their new "forever"homes. I know Blair is doing very well as we kept in touch with the person who adopted her.

One of the hard things about living away so far from home is the distance from friends and family. This is generally ok, and due to the fact that I know the choice that I/we made to move to the US was the right one, it is something that I do not often dwell on. However, the things that really are difficult are when major life events happen to those I love. By this I mean marriages, kids, sickness etc...

So far I have missed the weddings of my two brothers, my best friends, my Grandma being sick and dying and children being born and growing up. My youngest brother, Phillip and his wife Sam have two children, Lucy and Andrew who have never met me. They are growing up very quickly. However, at least, with the advent of the internet and digital technology it is possible to keep involved electronically. Recently, after my parents visited, we sent some presents back for them. Philip sent me some photos which are posted here (Andrew top left, Lucy bottom right).

The next cat we fostered was Stella. She was initially a very scared shy cat at our main foster home. I spent a lot of time with her and she started to trust me and used to come out to me. I think this was the point that discovered spending and time with scared, shy and semi-feral cats and getting them to be trusting, tame and eventually to a "forever" home became a passion of mine.

When her original foster home went through some minor renovations we took Stella as a foster cat. After about a year she found her home. A fantastic young lady who now is fostering Star for us. Stella is doing really, really well in her new home with some brothers and sisters. My work with her and the success of this is one of the inspiration along with Baby Boy as an inspiration to why I am so involved and so passionate about cat rescue.

Snowflake unfortunatley lost one of foster cats, Sampson two weeks ago. He came to us when his owner died last year. He was, a sweet wonderful boy. After he'd been with us about a week his foster Mam at the time noticed he wasn't feeling well. We took him to our specialist vet. They diagnosed him with Lymphoma. We made the decision to treat him and he lived extremely happily for almost a year and half in a very special home, with a very special foster Mam who gave him all the love and attention he deserved. Finally he decided it was time to go leaving us a lot a very happy memories as well as a big hole because he impacted all the volunteers. I'm sure he is now playing with Baby Boy, Veronica and Adobe as well as a lot of other friends. He will be and is missed.

The Promenanders

As the music rises and falls
In an atmosphere that calls,
Even the least ardent of souls,
Out of the everyday roles
That it has been deigned for them to play.
As they sit aroud they can be heard to say
The most beautiful thoughts and speeches,
The kind of talk that reaches
The heart of every man.
It is if their plan
Is to reach that schism
Of happiness, of delight - hedinism.

Unfortunatley this state of rapture,
Is gone at the finale. One can't recapture
Even a moment later.
As if the heart is left a crater,
A gap, a longing to be fulfilled;
The feelings of the world to be stilled.
The souls cry out just for peace
The music it seems is just a lease
As other things try
To reach that unknown high
That will again leave in time.
This scurvy needs a cure - it needs some lime!

The next short poem was written whilst I was waiting outside Buckingham Palace for Louise and her parents to come out. Her Dad was the County Scout Leader for Cheshire and had been invited to one of The Queens garden parties. Etiquette states that the wife plus any un-married daughters are to attend.

On Guard

Not a movement, not a glimmer.
For a home a small black box,
Not a home of your own
It's shared with countless others
AS folks stand and stare.

In the summer it is stiffling
As bright red tunics buttoned up.
And tall hats made of fur
In the winter give no protection
To the wind, the rain, the snow.

But, no matter what
You stand there all alone
As dignatories in posh cars
Or guests all togged up
Seem to pass you unaware.

Poets Inspiration

I can see why
The poets where inspired
One can sit or lie
And let imagination be fired.
The powerful mountains that rise
Above a silvery, shinnering lake
Their grandeur and size
Proving all mans work just to be fake.

4th June 1991 - Ambleside, England

The next poem I am going to post was written in response to seeing the starving and suffering Kurdish and Bangledeshi people on Television.

Pain

They stand on stage and sing
Claiming adulation as they dance
Not for themselves
They're millionaires:-
They want "us" to give to the suffering.

They stand there in Parliament,
Arguing like children just to score points
All for themselves.
They need votes:-
"Compassionate" aid is sent.

They go around the streets preaching
Like a competition to convert the most
All for themselves.
They want to get to Heaven:-
A hungry babe in screaching.

17th May 1991 - Ealing, London, England.

The next cats we fostered were/are Fred and Barney. They were returned because of health problems. They were adopted out together as kittens and came back together because Fred had food allergies. Due to the fact that they had to be on special food they had to be kept seperate so when Baby Boy was adopted out we agreed to take them. That was in October 2003 and they are still with us. It became apparant that their health problems were much more chronic. They need to be kept together and not mixed with other cats. They now live happily together in my office at home. They are still up for adoption. However, due, to the health issues and the fact that they need to go together makes it very unlikely that they will and that they will be my office cats for some time to come.

This photo of the boys was taken by a professional photgrapher who has volunteered to take photos for Snowflake. Her name is Katie Seitz and her web-site is found here.

The next foster cat we had was Baby Boy. He was a guy that really impacted our lives and confirmed the calling we had in this work.

He first came into lives in March 2003. He was unhappy in his current foster home. We thought he was about 8 years old. He was adopted out in October 2003. Unfortunatley he was returned in March 2004 because he was not very well and the person who adopted him could not afford the cost. After he came back he was not himself so we took him to Snowflake's "specialist" vet, Cornwallis Road, in Durham. It was determined that he was a lot older than we thought, about 17 years old. One of the problems with animal rescue is that it is not very often we know the exact age of the cats we rescue. It was also determined that he had bad gingivits, which it then became apparant that we it was due to renal failure. As he was happy and in no pain we took the decision to treat him. He lived many happy months with a lot of loving care from Jenn. He finally came to point where after a tough life he realised he was loved and that it was time to say goodbye, so with him failing, we made the hard, but correct decision to put him asleep. The date: July 20th 2006 will always be on our minds. He taught us so much. How animals can give back, can inspire, can fight and above all love back. He is why we do so much and are driven to give back and give so many other cats the chance he finally got and give them a chance to get the special love and attention for a live time rather than the finally couple of years.

This weekend has been one of my favourite sporting events, the Ryder Cup. There is a special atmosphere about this competition between Europe and the US at golf. Its also the one time every 2 years that I am very definatley European. This years competition has finished with Europe once again totally out playing the US winning with a final score on 18 1/2 to 9 1/2, winning all 5 sessions and winning the singles by a staggering 8 1/2 to 3 1/2.

On paper the US have the best players. 1-2-3 in the World were on there team, so why over the last 10 years have they done so badly? I guess it's the problem that US National Teams have a problem. Look at the Basketball team failing in the Olympics and World Championships or the Baseball Team failing to qualify for the Olympics. I think individual franchises or individual performances are more important to the Country than the team. This is strange especially as the USA is arguably the most patriotc Country in the world.

The next poem is the first after I moved to London. It was written whilst waiting to get off work.

The Clock

Slowly, Slowly,
"Get a move on please
We're waiting, we're waiting.
Oh! please hurry up!"
Another minute ticks by
At the clocks own inexorable pace.

The Good Ol' Days

Those were the days my Friend!!!

"Aye!" says the old man hunched
Crippled with arthritis. Old leather slippers
Allowing a wrinkled big toe a sight
Of the flickering, temperemental coal fire
Through a hole wrought by years of use.
"Aye!", he says again, "they woz grand but 'ard
You young 'uns y'don't know yer born!"

It was like travelling back in time
My jeans and sweatshirt felt as though
They belonged to some future era more akin to Star Trek.
It should be brown baggy pants tied with string,
Or perhaps braces holding up and showing
Beneath the ragged, patched tweed jacket.
And, of course on my crown, the flat cap
Without which I could not take my rightful place.

"Y'know son, when ah was your age
Ah'd been workin' down in put for years.
Aye! me, our kid and the auld man
Doon their in Shotton Colliery. It were bad.
Made us men though, aye, it'll so you some good
Working in all that clart, wet n'dark.
No place for sissy's that."

"Ah remember me mam, God rest her soul.
Cryin' buckets she was. "Y'Dads gone t'war."
Nivver really understood, too young. "Fightin for King George,
And England." Died in glory they told us.
Ah was right proud, someat t'boast to me mates.
Better that way though, poor, Kack doon the street blind
And Johnny in number ten, gone mad they said.
I nivver did see me mam smile again.
No, not after that."

"Mind you, laddie, I did me bit for blighty!
Forty-one it was when ah was called up.
'Ad a missus n' two kids be then.
Sent me to desert under Monty, great bloke,
The lads worshiped 'im, he were a genius.
Went all the t'Alamein wi 'im. Stuffed the Krauts!!
Copped it in the leg. 'Ad to be sent 'ome.
Pity really, 'ah was just beginnin' to enjoy meself!"

"It wern't all fightin' n' work though.
Used t'love Saturday afternoon at Roker or St. James'.
Fifties were best, ganin' up to Newcastle wi' grandbairns
Stannin' in warm or cold watchin' Jackie,
Milburn that is, destroyin' Spurs or the Arsenal.
The other United, Manchester, were a canny side n'all.
It were a great day in 'Pools when the Busby Babes came.
Got beat, like, but we was proud of the lads.
Ken Johnson got a goal. He own that chippy now."

Yes! I did know, that link with today
Bringing me back to reality. Passing thro' eighty years
And, looking back, despite modern technology,
We're no better off. Just as much poverty and
On the brink of war as fifty years ago.
Jeans and sweatshity, modern trends bit no better off.
Aye, Ah'll think Ah'll get patty n'chips from Kennys.
He played again Man United and score, y'know!!

The next poem I am going to post was inspired after reading William Horwood's novels Callanish and Stonor Eagle.

The Eagle

He sat there all alone,
The vastness of the sky,
Was once his proud domain
His wings used no more
Trapped by huge metal barws
For men to stand and stare
How he ached himself to free.

Suddenly, he saw hope
The cage was left ajar.
Forward his body surged.
Joy came back, life anew
As up and up he rose,
With grace, to glide, to swoop.
Free to where he belonged.

It is now time to start telling the story of the cats that we have fosters for Snowflake and/or are still fostering.

We started fostering in January 2003. We started because a friend of mine at work found an abandoned Maine Coon cat and knowing that we volunteered for an animal rescue group brought him to me. We called him Stormy because he was found and survived an ice storm. He was adopted within a week to a vet tech at one of the vets that we use. Unfortunatley he came back to us in May 2005 when she split with her husband. When he came back he tested positive with FIV which he did not have when he was adopted out. He was again adopted out within a few days of coming back. He is still doing very well in his new home.
